Chapter 7

‘I was infatuated, then one day she brought one of her exes along to play. He seemed a nice-enough guy. Until.’ He stopped himself short. Too much talking. ‘Some things are better left in the past.’

‘You shouldn’t put them there until you understand them.’

‘I don’t even understand you, Kezia.’

‘Well you could always try harder. If, that is, you want to.’

‘You know what? I do want to.’

Kez could listen to his voice all day, it was the purr of a cat, gentle, lulling, in tune with her senses so that it connected with something inside her every time.

The broad palm of his hand swept down her back sending her pulse rate up a notch, and when he got to his feet he took her with him. ‘Come on, let’s go and check you over properly. But first,’ he smiled, ‘I want you to do something.’

She was inches from him and he just had to know she was trembling, because no way was it just on the inside. She rested her hand against his chest to steady herself, and this time he didn’t dodge away. Just covered it with his own, then gently lifted it away, but didn’t drop it.

‘Just go up to Red, slip the halter on and give him a pat and then take it off.’ She raised an eyebrow. The man was on a different planet. ‘Just so you know you can.’ Which seemed a bit warped to her, just when he’d got her all psyched up and ready to go in an altogether better direction. She sighed, and his grin broadened into a smile. Which was sexy too. ‘Do as you’re told for once, woman.’

Red stood like a docile donkey, like he knew the rules and couldn’t give a monkeys. Swine. She went back, handed the halter over and he put his arm around her and squeezed, which was a bit too brotherly for her liking, but what the heck.

‘Ouch, watch the arm.’

He laughed again. And it was a little dose of heaven. ‘Come on, let’s go and examine it properly.’

‘What’s with his name then? Red?’ They walked back towards the house, striding easily together, stepping in time, and it clicked in her head that the nervous anticipation which had been winding up inside her had dissipated like a cloud broken up by the breeze.

‘Red, for red alert. He was always switched to red alert, from the day he was born. As soon as he found his feet he was ready to use them.’

‘And you let me pick him, you bugger.’ She mock-punched him.

‘Your choice. Everything, as they say, is for a reason.’

He might have managed to disperse the tension while they were walking back, but as soon as she put a foot through the doorway it all came back.

Sex was easy when it was ‘heat of the moment, can’t possibly say no, just gotta do it’ except he hadn’t actually mentioned sex. But the way he was looking at her shouted it out like a klaxon.
